Create a Legacy of Open Space for Future Generations
If you would like to help support open space in our community for generations to come, please consider including a donation to South Metro Land Conservancy in your estate planning. Organizations like SMLC exist to support open spaces forever, so a planned gift to a land trust is a natural fit for people who want the estate they built over a lifetime to continue promoting their values well into the future.
Making a charitable bequest to SMLC can be as simple and easy as adding language like this to your will or living trust:
“I give to South Metro Land Conservancy (contact us to insert our tax identification number), a non-profit organization with its principal offices located in Littleton, Colorado, [$ amount, list of assets or description of property, or % of estate], for its general uses and purposes [or “for acquisition of land to be preserved as open space"].”
The most flexible bequest would be a gift of money, property, or a percentage of the estate to SMLC for its general purposes, which include not only supporting land acquisition but also stewardship of existing conservation easements and partnering with other organizations to support regional land conservation efforts. However, if you wish to ensure that your gift will be used exclusively to purchase new open space parcels, you may use the more specific language above.
An even easier way to dedicate a portion of your estate to protecting open lands is to designate South Metro Land Conservancy as one of the beneficiaries of a POD bank account, insurance policy, or retirement plan.
A legacy gift, whether large or small, has a significant impact toward ensuring that our children and grandchildren will enjoy Arapahoe County's special natural areas. A planned gift also has benefits for the donor. If your estate is subject to estate tax, a charitable contribution is fully deductible and may put you in a lower bracket. And a bequest is flexible, because you can change your will or trust at any time. A planned gift does not affect your assets now, but allows you to continue your efforts to protect open space for a very long time.
If you are interested in making a legacy donation to South Metro Land Conservancy, please contact us at info@smlc.land for more information. We also suggest consulting your attorney or financial advisor about making a bequest or beneficiary designation. And please let us know about your planned gift so we can thank and recognize you!
